Birthplace of Pepsi

This is the actual site where Pepsi-Cola was first invented by Caleb Bradham in his pharmacy in 1898. "Brad’s Drink,” a mix of sugar, water, caramel, lemon oil, nutmeg, and other natural additives, was an overnight sensation. Pepsi Family Center

Visit the Pepsi Family Center for what feels like a trip in a time machine. It takes you back to 1835 with hands-on activities that allow you to sail a ship, distill turpentine, piece a quilt, and more. You could spend an entire day playing a variety of roles within New Bern’s history.

Tryon Palace

It was here that governors ruled, legislators debated, patriots gathered, and George Washington danced. The North Carolina History Center

An addition to the Tryon Palace, this museum will transport you through time starting from the formation of the coastline and through the people who shaped the history of the region. The NC History Center provides an interesting view into the state’s beginnings and offers an excellent museum experience.

The New Bern Academy Museum

Built in 1809, the building was originally a school house and then served as a hospital during the Civil War. In 1881 it became part of the New Bern school system, which used it for classes until 1971. Today the New Bern Academy Museum is home to 4 historical exhibitions on the Civil War and the history of education.

The New Bern Battlefield Park

A historic site that includes more than 30 acres of the original battlefield from the 1862 Battle of New Bern. Enjoy a “History Walk” with 35 interpretive panels that tell the story of the battle and the impact it had on New Bern, as well as a gateway plaza featuring a large concrete map that defines the details of the battle.
